A college education requires a lot of reading鈥攖extbooks, articles, lab reports, novels, essays, etc.! The MJC Reading Department is here to support your success in these reading endeavors through several courses that offer direct instruction in vocabulary and reading skills. This CSU-transferable course will help you evaluate what you read in addition to reviewing foundational reading skills and strategies. Looking for bias, evaluating evidence, and identifying logical fallacies are all part of Critical Reading. Reading 184 also includes vocabulary study and writing in response to reading. This course fulfills the General Education requirement for 鈥淐ritical Thinking鈥 (A3) at California State Universities. It is offered in both online and face-to-face modalities. This course gets you ready for college reading by providing practice with skills such as locating the main idea and supporting details, identifying an author鈥檚 purpose and tone, and evaluating a text鈥檚 evidence. Engaging accessible texts and studying academic vocabulary are also part of Reading 82. While this course does not transfer to a four-year institution, it can help you prepare for taking transfer-level courses. It is offered in both online and face-to-face modalities.
If you鈥檙e looking for an on-ramp to college coursework, Reading 40 provides review of basic vocabulary, reading skills, and study skills at a slow-and-steady pace. In this course, you鈥檒l practice key steps in reading such as locating the main idea, outlining supporting details, and making inferences.While this course does not transfer to a four-year institution, it can help you prepare for taking transfer-level courses. It is offered in both online and face-to-face modalities.
If your spelling skills could use a tune-up, Spelling 32 provides just that through study of spelling rules and those tricky words that seem to break the rules. Even with spell checkers, it鈥檚 useful to develop your on-the-spot spelling skills for academic and professional writing.While this course does not transfer to a four-year institution, it can help you prepare for taking transfer-level courses. It is offered online.
